Kiwanis K-Kids
Lake George grades 2-5 have been selected to have the opportunity to join the Lake George Elementary School K-Kids Club sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of South Orange County . Kiwanis is a professional organization of men and women that do community service to better our community. The South Orange Kiwanis Club focuses on our youth from Pre-K through college and has a number of programs that recognize outstanding achievement by both students and teachers.
Like Kiwanis, the K-Kids Club is a club that focuses on community service, good citizenship and becoming positive role models for other students. The students involved in the K-Kids Club will have the opportunity to learn leadership skills by electing officers and running the meetings. The projects may include cleaning up the campus, reading to the younger kids in school, working with a nearby nursing home, working with the local Humane Society, creating character education videos for the school, as well as a number of other projects that the students may come up with.
Our meetings are held twice a month on the second and fourth Thursday at 3:00 p.m. and will last about an hour.
Earth Day Project |
||
To help celebrate Earth Day, K-Kids decorated Publix bags for our Partners in Education. Publix will be making a display and using them to bag groceries. K-Kids came up with inspirational messages and illustrations to help promote our community to "Save Our Earth".

Pasta for Pennies Service Project |
February Service Project |
|
K-Kids finished our Pasta for Pennies fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lyphoma Society. Our school raised a total of $1,741.74 in three weeks. We were $458.26 away from reaching our goal of $2,200. K-Kids thanks everyone for their support and help in making a difference! The students did a number of things to help promote this fundraiser: wrote skits for the announcements, make posters to display around the school, put boxes together and labeled for each teacher to collect their monies, etc. |
At our February meeting K-Kid club members decorated large posterboard hearts and wrote sweet messages for Valentine's and filled Valentine cups with candy for a nearby nursing home. They wanted to let our elders know they are loved as well. Our fourth and fifth grade K-Kid members worked really hard helping our school CRT, Mrs. Killon, sort through boxes of new textbooks by grade levels. They were of great assistance!

First K-Kids Meeting |
November Service Project |
|
We had over 75 students sign up to join K-Kids and over 60 showed up for the first meeting. We elected officers the first day and the students' worked on a list of projects they’d like to do. Thomas Kirk (from Kiwanis of South Orlando) gave us our Charter and presented Mrs. Abalo with The Giraffe Hero award. |
At the second meeting the kids gathered the food from the LGE food drive and bagged them; mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, corn, gravy and cranberry sauce that all the grade levels donated were all put into bags the kids decorated up for Thanksgiving. They made 18 bags for 18 families here at Lake George and the PTA donated turkeys to complete the meal. There was so much food left over that we were fortunate enough to donate the rest and help out Great Oaks Village for their dinner. |
